8 MGCCC teams win NJCAA Academic Awards

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast had eight teams earn NJCAA Academic Awards in the 2022-23 season, including three that ranked in the top 10 of their respective sports.

Teams must have a 3.0 GPA or higher to be honored. The Gulf Coast teams honored won NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Honorable Mention.

Coach Brad Thornton's golf team finished tied for sixth with a 3.68 GPA, the highest among all Gulf Coast teams. His Bulldogs squad was fifth at the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship.

Coach Sam Blackburn's women's tennis team finished tied for 12th in the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship and sixth among teams in both divisions with a 3.66 GPA.

Former coach Tim Ryan's men's basketball team finished ninth in the country with a 3.31 GPA.

Coach David Kuhn's softball team had a 3.49 and finished fifth in the Region 23 Championship, while former coach Aaron Avila's women's soccer team had a 3.43 GPA.

Coach Bob Keller's baseball squad had a 3.35 GPA, and Chris Handy's men's soccer team finished in the top 20 nationally with a 3.29 GPA. The men's tennis team finished in the top 25 with a 3.24 GPA.
