Garman grabs 2 wins at NJCAAs
Abigail Garman won a pair of No. 5 singles matches Monday to advance to the consolation bracket finals in the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships in Tucson, Ariz.
"It was a great day for Abby," Bulldogs coach Sam Blackburn said. "She played lights out in the first match, just solid tennis. Then against Jones, she pulled the upset against the region champions. She played really, really well. It was an up-and-down match for both players, but at the end of the day she was a better player."
Bayley Askin and Ashleigh Chelette (So., Vancleave/Vancleave) won their only match of the day, claiming a No. 3 doubles consolation quarterfinals victory over Eastern Arizona's Olivia Haynie and Hannah Miller 8-4.
"They played really well," Blackburn said. "They started out slow, but they ended up rocking and rolling."
Garman (Fr., Diamondhead/Hancock) defeated Triton's Makenna Schaffner 8-2 in the quarterfinals and Jones' Sophie Endt 9-7 in the semifinals. She almost won a third match with Hayden Hensarling (Fr., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) at No.2 doubles quarterfinals, but they were edged 9-7 in a tiebreaker by Wallace State's Breanna Vann and Natalia Barron.
Gulf Coast is expected to play their final matches at the Reffkin Tennis Center on Tuesday. The consolation brackets will finish up in the afternoon.
