Smith named MACCC Player of the Week

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast linebacker Mike Smith piled up the tackles in last week's thrilling 31-24 overtime win against Hinds, and now he's added to the pile of Bulldogs awards early this season.

Smith, a sophomore from Flora, was named MACCC Defensive Player of the Week for his 16-tackle effort that featured a pick-six. He had 11 solo tackles in that bunch, along with a forced fumble and a tackle for loss. His interception in the final two minutes led to a 41-yard return for a 24-17 lead.

In Week 1, running back Deondre House ran away with Offensive Player of the Week honors for Gulf Coast.

The Bulldogs won't play this week after the game against Copiah-Lincoln was postponed because the Wolves are experiencing COVID-19 issues. Gulf Coast travels to East Central on Oct. 22.
