Bulldogs back in the saddle this week at ECCC

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast got an unexpected week off, but the Bulldogs tried to put it to best use on the practice field and in the training room.
When the game last week was postponed, Gulf Coast got extra time to prepare for Thursday's trip to Decatur to take on East Central (1-2).
"We had some minor injuries we let heal up," Bulldogs coach Jack Wright said. "It's added another week of practice, so it's more work for the players. It's been time for the players to get more practice and stay mentally dialed into the season. When something unexpected like that happens, it's a challenge to stay engaged. We're just trying to improve every single day and deal with the disappointment of not playing."

The Warriors are coming off a 28-21 loss at Pearl River, having shut out Southwest Mississippi 21-0 the previous week. They are led by head coach Ken Karcher and quarterback Holman Edwards, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from French Camp.
"They're very well-coached and play extremely hard, like they always are under Coach Karcher," Wright said. "He always has them ready to play.
"The quarterback is a threat anytime he pulls it down and keeps it, which is very dangerous. It's very hard to determine if you want to pressure him or drop back and keep everything underneath. He presents some problems."
In Gulf Coast's last game, a thrilling 31-24 overtime win over Hinds, the Bulldogs got yet another dominant performance from defensive lineman Brian Merritt (So., Colquitt County/Moultrie, Ga.). He finished with 10 total tackles, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry.
Merritt had 39 tackles on the 2019 national championship team, including 11 tackles for loss and five sacks.
"Merritt's been a force since he's been here," Wright said. "He always provides pressure. He doesn't stay blocked long. In every single game, he's created at least one or two disruptive plays that have really halted the opponent's drives or put them behind the chains. He plays with great effort and great intensity. He's been really good here for two years."
