Bulldogs down Hinds in double overtime

Mississippi Gulf Coast needed overtime to notch its first win of the men's soccer season, but Jordan Parron's goal in the second extra session at Hinds was the difference.

"It was a great game," Bulldogs coach Chris Handy said. "It was one of the hardest-played games I've seen in a while. It was definitely a good result for us for sure."

Parron won a 50-50 ball on a clearance by the Hinds keeper, then played a two-man game with James Beattie before scoring in the corner of the goal. The golden goal came with five minutes left.

The victory against a traditional MACJC power gets the Bulldogs a good result after a tough 1-0 loss in the opener.

"They really like winning," Handy said. "I thought they played really hard in the Lewis & Clark game. They really wanted this one, as well. That's a lot of work they put in."

He said the grittiness his team has showed paid dividends, and the hard work they put in should go a long way to getting mistakes corrected.

Beattie opened the scoring about eight minutes into the second half. His goal was unassisted.

"That was all him," Handy said.

Hinds outshot Gulf Coast 9-5, but managed only a Bryden Reed penalty kick with seven minutes left in regulation. Bulldogs keeper Bryce Yelverton stopped one attempt, but was judged to have moved too soon. He got his hands on the second one, but couldn't keep it out.

The teams went to overtime, where Parron ended things.

Gulf Coast (1-1) returns to action Tuesday when East Central visits for the first regular-season game in Perkinston this year.
