Gulf Coast cruises past Jones

PERKINSTON – Mississippi Gulf Coast turned in a dominating home performance Tuesday night, downing Jones County 3-1 in men's soccer action.

The different players scored for the Bulldogs, who improved to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in MACJC South play. The win further solidifies their hold on second place in the South, which would give them a home playoff game against the No. 3 team from the North.

"It was a game we needed," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. "It pretty much secures our place in the playoffs, so we can feel comfortable going forward and knock out these two games."

Jones falls to 6-5-1, 4-3-1.

Lewis Tillman scored the opener for Gulf Coast in the 31st minute, with an assist from Juan Salazar.

Salazar got his own goal early in the second half off an assist from Cordarius Williams, who went on to score his own goal with 19 minutes to play. Gio Freitas picked up the assist.

Jones scored on the final kick of the game, but it was too little, too late.

"I thought we played well," Handy said. "We changed our formation a little bit, which allowed us to be more stable in the back. We gave up a late goal, but overall we were very, very solid in the back, I think probably as good as we've been all year."

Gulf Coast returns to action Friday at Meridian.
