No. 14 MGCCC picks up 1 win at national tourney

No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast won one match Monday during the first day of play at the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship in Plano, Texas.

John Murphy (Fr, Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen) defeated DuPage's Sohil Sampat 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles opening round. That gives the Bulldogs two big points in the team standings.

Three others singles players and two doubles teams lost their opening matches. They move into the consolation bracket, where match wins are worth a half-point.

Noah Rowell (Fr, Wiggins/Stone) had a bye into the second round of the No. 4 singles main draw. He'll play Harry Foster from Marion Military on Tuesday morning, and Brett Bowen (So, Oxford/Oxford) will play his first match in No. 6 singles against a player from Cowley. Bowen and Reid Cudd (Fr, Wiggins/Stone) have their first No. 3 doubles match on Tuesday, as well.
