PERKINSTON — No. 17 Mississippi Gulf Coast walked off a pair of five-inning victories over East Mississippi on Saturday, winning the first 10-2 and the second 8-0.
Kristian Jones (So., Southaven/DeSoto Central) had a three-run homer to end the first game, and Emaleigh Coates (So., Lucedale/George County) had an RBI double to end the second on Cancer Awareness Day and Sophomore Day at Ross-Smith Field.
"It was a great day," Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn said. "It was good honoring our cancer survivors and a great day for our sophomores. It's a good team win with contributions from a lot of people. We got good pitching, timely hits and did a lot of little things right."
Gulf Coast got 3.1 innings of scoreless relief from Abby Vance (So., Calhoun City/Calhoun City) in the first game and a three-hitter from Jovi Jones (Fr., Batesville/Magnolia Heights) in the second.
Kristian Jones was a menace at the plate all day. She went 3-for-4 with that homer in the first game and was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the second.
"I was seeing it good today," she said. "After the tough losses at East Central and not being able to get on base (there), it felt really good to be confident again."
Coates, Vance, Kristian Jones and Jovi Jones were four of 14 sophomores honored between games. The others were Grace Allgood (So., Hurley/East Central), Whitley Tanner (So., Hurley/East Central), Aislynn Andrews (So., Poplarville/Poplarville), Alyssia Little (So., Brandon/Brandon), Kat Knight (So., Tupelo/Tupelo), Darcy Novak (So., Hurley/East Central), Layne Turan (So., Gulfport/West Harrison), K.K. Agner (So., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights), Breanna Green (So., Saraland, Ala./Saraland) and Haylee Sidaway (So., Biloxi/St. Martin).
"It means a lot because our group of sophomores is very close to each other, especially with our situation last year," Kristian Jones said. "I thought we grew close last year, so to see us come together today felt great."
