Gulf Coast gets another split

PERKINSTON — For the second straight night, Mississippi Gulf Coast salvaged a split and the recipe was pretty much the same.

The Bulldogs beat Baton Rouge 8-5 in the nightcap after falling 13-10 in the opener Thursday at Ken "Curly" Farris Field. They got stronger pitching performances in the second games each night, with Wednesday ending in a no-hitter.

The Bulldogs (2-2) broke open the nightcap Thursday with four runs in each of the first two innings while Hayden Robb (Fr., Vancleave, Vancleave) was putting up zeroes.

Tucker Thomas (So., Biloxi, Biloxi) hit a three-run homer in the first, and Jared Tribett (Fr., Lumberton, Lumberton) continued a scorching night with an RBI single. He had two home runs in the opener.

Gulf Coast took advantage of a sloppy second inning to score four runs on just one hit.

Bulldog pitchers gave up 14 hits in the first game which spoiled three-RBI games by Tribett and Connor Spencer (Fr., Hernando, Hernando). Tribett also had a double.

The Bulldogs don't play again until they head to Decatur on Feb. 21. They'll play East Mississippi and Bossier Parish in a split doubleheader.
