Harris, Bond named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Antoine Harris and Kaylen Bond have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for Feb. 10-16.

Harris, a freshman right-hander from Chalmette, didn't allow a hit in five innings as the first of three Gulf Coast pitchers to combine for a no-hitter in a 5-0 win at Nunez. Playing on his former high school field, he struck out nine.

Bond, a freshman from Perkinston, won all four of her matches last week while dropping only two games. She teamed with Anna Stringer to win No. 2 doubles matches Coastal Alabama-South and Hinds, and she dropped just one game in victories at No. 4 singles.

Also nominated:

Nakendra Owens, a sophomore forward from Port Gibson, averaged 18.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week for Gulf Coast. She had 18 points and six rebounds in a 57-56 win over Meridian, and 19 points and six rebounds in a 57-56 loss to Pearl River. She hit a 3 with 27.2 seconds left to tie the game at 56, only to see PRCC make a free throw in the final seconds to win.

Seth Macute, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, won all four of his matches last week while dropping only four games. He teamed with Wesley Fontaine to win over Coastal Alabama-South and Hinds in No. 2 doubles, and he dropped only one game in wins at No. 2 singles.

Tucker Thomas, a sophomore from Biloxi who played catcher, designated hitter and center field, caught a no-hitter and hit two home runs while batting .444. He slugged a pinch-hit two-run homer in the eighth inning of a 13-9 loss at Nunez, then had a triple in a 5-0 win in the nightcap which saw him backstop the no-no. He had a double in a 13-10 loss to Baton Rouge, and extended his hit streak to four with a three-run homer in an 8-5 win in Game 2.

Rakeya Travis, a freshman shortstop from Poplarville, slugged two more home runs to lead No. 8 Gulf Coast to two wins at Marion Military. She went 1-for-2 in each game, with a two-run homer in each.

Kristen Cade, a sophomore from Harrison Central, moved to 2-0 by striking out 10 in a seven-hitter to beat Marion Military 5-2.
