
Merritt named MGCCC Student-Athlete of the Week
PERKINSTON — Brian Merritt has been named MGCCC Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 30-Oct. 6.
Merritt, a freshman defensive tackle from Colquitt, Ga., lived in the Southwest backfield during No. 2 Gulf Coast's 55-34 win at Homecoming. He had 2.5 sacks among his 4.5 tackles for loss, piling up 11 total tackles.
Also nominated:
Chance Lovertich, a sophomore quarterback from Jackson Prep, threw for five touchdowns against Southwest. He fell just one short of his school-record for touchdowns while completing 24-of-32 passes for 345 yards. He completed passes to 12 different receivers.
Travis Isaac, a freshman wide receiver from Ocala, Fla., had three solo special teams tackles against Southwest.
Jon Hopkins, a sophomore golfer from Bishop's Stortford, England, won medalist at the Itawamba Fall Invitational in Amory. He was the only golfer in the field to finish below par. Hopkins shot 3-under in the 36-hole event.
