Matthews named MGCCC Student-Athlete of the Week

PERKINSTON — Jackie Matthews has been named MGCCC Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 23-29.

Jackie Matthews, a sophomore defensive back from Pinson, Ala., had two first-half interceptions, including a pick-6, to lead No. 4 Gulf Coast to a 38-20 win at No. 11 Co-Lin. He had a 75-yard interception return for a TD that put the Bulldogs up 24-0, and his 20-yard return earlier in the game set up another short touchdown drive.

Also nominated:

Deondre House, a freshman running back from Senatobia, ran 15 times for 96 yards in Gulf Coast's win at Co-Lin. He averaged 6.4 yards per carry, helping the Bulldogs to 213 yards on the ground.

James Redmond, a freshman midfielder from Bremen, Germany, scored twice to lead Mississippi Gulf Coast to a 4-0 win at East Central. He has six goals and an assist in two games against the Warriors.

Caden Davis, a freshman kicker/punter from Pearl, made a 39-yard field goal and all five point-afters at Co-Lin. Handling all punting duties, he also had two downed inside the 20.
