Bulldogs break century mark against Carey JV

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast broke the century mark and won by 25, but coach Wendell Weathers wasn't happy.

The Bulldogs beat the William Carey JV 102-77 at the Weathers/Wentzell Center on Monday night.

"I didn't think we played very well at all," Weathers said. "It's a combination of two things. We had a week off without being here, and we beat them so bad the fist time up there that they didn't get ready to play. We won by 25; we should have won by 50."

The Bulldogs, who played their first game after the Thanksgiving break, are 6-1, while the Crusaders fall to 1-6.

Gulf Coast's Zach Parker (6-2, 185, So., Biloxi/Biloxi) led all scorers with 24 points. Four Bulldogs finished with 11: Jaylen Peters (6-3, 194, Fr., Pass Christian/Pass Christian), Winston Morgan (5-10, 170, So., East Catholic/Manchester, Conn.), Harvey Smart (6-3, 167, So., West Harrison/Gulfport) and Davion Cole-Johnson (6-4, 210, So., Pike/Glen Ellyn, Ill.).

The Bulldogs fell behind 11-4 after an early 9-0 run the Crusaders, but 3-pointers by Qua'darius Green (6-8, 180, Fr., McComb/McComb), Morgan and Parker put Gulf Coast out in front. An 18-4 run shortly thereafter gave them a lead they'd never relinquish.

Gulf Coast returns to action Monday with its only pre-Christmas break MACJC South Division game. Hinds visits Perkinston with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs hope the win over the Crusaders sets them up for a good week of practice ahead of a strong Hinds team that's 5-1.

"Hopefully, it'll knock the rust off," Weathers said. "We had a couple of kids who played pretty good, but we had others who didn't."
