PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast battled No. 9 Pearl River to a virtual draw in the first half of their men's basketball showdown Monday night.

The Wildcats, though, were too much in the second half and pulled away for a 78-49 victory at the Weathers-Wentzell Center.

Gulf Coast falls to 6-9 overall, 4-9 MACCC South. Pearl River is 9-1, 9-1.

Melvion Flanagan (Fr., Alexandria La./Peabody) led the Bulldogs with 15 points. Dontavius Proby (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) added 10.

Gulf Coast ripped off a 10-0 run that saw the Bulldogs take a 27-24 lead with 3:17 to play in the half. Flanagan had a pair of 3-pointers in the spurt, but Pearl River would score the last six points of the half to take a lead into the locker room.

The Wildcats would start the second half on a 22-10 run and never looked back.

Gulf Coast will close out the regular season Thursday with a trip to East Central. Tipoff in Decatur will be at 6 p.m.

There will be no MACCC playoffs this season. All teams will qualify for the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, with seeding based on regular-season record, number of games played and the Massey Ratings.
