MGCCC alive in 4 brackets at nationals
No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast picked up one win on a tough Day 2 at the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship in Plano, Texas.
Evan Chubb (Fr, Biloxi/St. Patrick) and Reid Cudd (So, Wiggins/Stone) bounced back from a three-set disappointment in the main draw earlier in the rain-delayed day to beat Barton's Thales Machado and Tinashe Muzenyi 6-4, 6-3.
There will be three more shots for Gulf Coast to pick up points in the consolation bracket Wednesday. Chubb, John Murphy (So, Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen) and Austin Moore (So, Petal/Petal) are scheduled to be on court in the morning in singles play.
On Tuesday in the main draw, Travis Bell (So, Jackson/Calloway) and Austin Vos (Fr, Perth, Australia/Applecross) slugged it out with Seward's Hugo Lobo and Nick Rouset, the sixth-seed, before falling 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-3 in No. 1 doubles.
In No. 2 doubles, Noah Rowell (So, Wiggins/Stone) and John Murphy fell to Cowley's Valter Oshiro and Gaston Walitzky 6-0, 6-4. Chubb and Cudd lost to South Carolina-Sumter's Nicklaus Neal and Leonardo Zancheta 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
The Bulldogs' Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams also lost consolation bracket matches.
Bell, Vos and Cudd won opening-day matches but lost their quarterfinal matches Wednesday.
