Buie, Lopareva, Bankston, Murphy named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Four tennis players who won championships at the MACJC/Region 23 Tournament have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for April 16-22.

 

Bianca Buie, a sophomore from Baia Mare, Romania, claimed her second state and region title. She won No. 1 singles this year and won at No. 2 in 2017.

 

Margarita Lopareva, a freshman from Moscow, Russia, didn't drop a set on the way to winning the No. 2 singles crown.

 

Megan Bankston, a freshman from Gulfport, won a pair of three-set matches on the way to winning No. 4 singles.

 

John Teague Murphy, a sophomore from Mobile, Ala., didn't drop a set on his way to winning the No. 3 singles title.

 

Also nominated:

 

Madison Wall, a freshman outfielder/designated hitter, had hits in all eight games for Gulf Coast, batting .444 while mainly batting leadoff. She had five hits, including two doubles, in a sweep at Meridian. Wall also belted a home run against Hinds.

 

Betty Mingo, a freshman right-hander from Choctaw Central, went 3-1 with a 1.22 ERA during a busy final week for Gulf Coast. She shut out Meridian 8-0 on a three-hitter, beat Hinds 9-1 while allowing six hits and defeated Coahoma 8-2 while allowing five hits. Mingo also hit a home run and drove in four runs.

 

Josh Lewis, a sophomore left-hander from Theodore, Ala., pitched eight strong innings but got a no-decision in a 4-2 loss to Jones County. He left down 2-1 after the top of the eighth, having scattered eight hits.
