Torrey named MGCCC Student-Athlete of the Week

PERKINSTON — Deandre Torrey has been named MGCCC Student-Athlete of the Week for Aug. 28-Sept. 3.

 

Torrey, a freshman running back from Gautier, scored four times and ran for 189 yards in Mississippi Gulf Coast's 42-41 win over Itawamba. He averaged 9.0 yards on 21 rushes and had touchdown runs of 4, 18, 15 and 46 yards.

Daquan Newkirk, a freshman from Orlando, Fla., had seven total tackles against Itawamba. He had three quarterback hurries, two tackles for loss and also broke up one pass.

 

Jordan Hall, a sophomore forward from Manchester, England, has six goals and one assist in Mississippi Gulf Coast's first three games. He had four goals in a 6-0 rout of the Texas College JV (NAIA) and two goals and an assist in a 5-0 defeat of Jones County to open MACJC South play.

 

Owen Betz, a sophomore from St. Stanislaus, has two shutouts in Mississippi Gulf Coast's first three games. The Bulldogs have gone 2-1, and he's shutout Texas College JV (NAIA) and Jones County. In his only loss, he saved 16 shots against No. 1 Tyler, allowing only one goal in the run of play in a 2-1 loss. The other goal was a PK.
