MGCCC closes out 2018 season

No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast closed out its season Friday on Day 4 of the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Tournament in Plano, Texas.

The Bulldogs' Evan Chubb (Fr, Biloxi/St. Patrick) was defeated in the consolation finals of No. 4 singles, losing 7-6 (1), 6-1 to Abraham Baldwin's Lukas Zavrel. Chubb had won a pair of three-set matches to get to the finals.

"Evan Chubb played well," Gulf Coast coach Gary Bourgeois said, "the best performances of the year for him in singles and doubles."

Gulf Coast finished tied with Glendale for 18th place with 10.5 points. That matches their total from last year.

"The mission was to come here and come back as the top team in the state," Bourgeois said. "I thought it was a great effort. We had some individual performers who were outstanding."

The Bulldogs didn't lose an MACJC dual match this season, and the group of sophomores leaves quite big shoes for what's expected to be a nine-man freshman class next year.

"This outgoing sophomore class, I think they lost only two matches their entire career," he said. "That's not a bad legacy to leave. We're going to miss them."
