Gulf Coast women pull away from Hinds
Mississippi Gulf Coast returned from the Thanksgiving break a little slow, but the Bulldogs women's team took it to Hinds late to win 57-45 in Utica.
"It kind of goes back to how we're building our identity," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "We want to wear teams down and be able to pull away in the second half. We started off really rusty and missed some shots we usually don't miss. We went 14-for-28 from the free-throw line, so that makes a difference."
Gulf Coast trailed late in the third quarter but took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter and just kept building. The Bulldogs improved to 6-1 on the season. It was a non-conference matchup against Hinds (0-5).
Aniya Saddler (So., Columbus/Columbus) led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Elsie Harris (So., Mobile, Ala./B.C. Rain) added 10.
"Saddler really got hot in the second and fourth quarters to really extend the lead," Adams said. "Coming off the break, we just need to fine tune some things."
The Bulldogs travel to Holmes on Thursday to start MACCC play. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Goodman.
