Mississippi Gulf Coast lost a heartbreaker Thursday night, dropping a 72-71 decision when Copiah-Lincoln hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
The Bulldogs had forced a missed 3-pointer, and Morgyn Payne (So., Coushatta, La/Red River) claimed the rebound. She was knocked to the ground and called for traveling as the buzzer sounded.
The officials put 0.7 seconds on the clock, and a desperation 3 banked in as the horn went off.
The loss knocked Gulf Coast out of contention for the eight-team MACCC Tournament field. The Bulldogs (13-9, 5-8 MACCC) will close out the regular season Thursday with Sophomore Night in Perkinston against East Mississippi. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
The Bulldogs will play in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, which starts Feb. 28.
Sharisse Bridges (So., Jackson/Callaway) led Gulf Coast with 14 points and 13 rebounds despite fouling out with five minutes to play. TK Catchings (So., New Hebron/Simpson Academy) also fouled out in the final minute.
Payne had 13 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Aniya Saddler (So., Columbus/Columbus) had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Elsie Harris added 11 points.
