25 straight for No. 15 Gulf Coast

WIGGINS — No. 15 Mississippi Gulf Coast continued to roll through the MACCC on Friday, blanking East Central 9-0 in men's tennis action.

The Bulldogs have won 25 consecutive matches against conference opponents, and in five matches this season have dropped only three courts. It was the second straight 9-0 win this week.

Pedro Molero (So., Maracaibo, Venezuela/U.E. Instituto Americano Joseph John Thomson) and Clay Fudge (So., Madison/Madison Central) helped jump-start the sweep by cruising in their doubles match.

"Our No. 1 doubles team proved they're one of the best doubles teams in our conference, and honestly in the country," Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. "They played a tough East Central team and beat them much easier than anybody expected. It was awesome to see them control it start to finish."

Paul Gayk (Fr., Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany/Berufskolleg Lehnerstrasse) got the ball rolling in singles.

"Paul had probably the strongest showing I've seen from him all season against a really tough player," Blackburn said. "He won the first set in a tiebreaker and ran away with the second set. He looked fit, looked strong and looks like he's getting better every match he plays."

East Central is 2-2, 2-2.

Gulf Coast turns around and plays a doubleheader Saturday in Montgomery, Ala. The Bulldogs will play Coastal Alabama-South in the morning and host Huntingdon College in the afternoon.
