No. 12 Gulf Coast Women blank ECCC

No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast wiped out East Central 9-0 at Decatur, winning its second straight MACCC women's tennis match to start the season.

"I was very pleased with the way the girls started and finished," Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. "They started playing great in doubles right out of the gate, and they didn't slow down. Never looked back. They took care of business, got it done, and got back on the bus. It was a good day for them."

The Bulldogs dropped only three games in three doubles matches, with Valeria Callejo (Madrid, Spain/I.E.S. Ortega y Gasset) and Kendall Burn (So., Wiggins/Stone) winning 8-0. That allowed Blackburn to rest Callejo, bumping up the Nos. 4-6 courts and bringing Dallas Tanner (Fr., Hattiesburg/Oak Grove) into the lineup.

Danique Vermue (Fr., 's-Heerenhoek, Netherlands/Scheldemond College) won her No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-0, and no Bulldog dropped more than two games.

Tanner beat her opponent 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.

"We had a good lead, and we were very confident we were going to finish things off well," Blackburn said. "We sat her and let the other girls step up a spot. It was nice to give Dallas a little more playing time."

East Central falls to 0-5, 0-2 MACCC.

Gulf Coast travels to New Albany on Tuesday to play Northeast Mississippi. First serves in the MACCC contest will be at 11 a.m.
