No. 12 Gulf Coast finishes 12th at NJCAAs

No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast picked up a couple more victories on their last day of competition at the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship, but fell just short of consolation bracket titles.

Kendall Burn (So., Wiggins/Stone) and the No. 3 doubles team of Mikenzy Dubrow (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) and Lauren Sullivan (Fr., Laurel/Laurel Christian) won their semifinal matches.

"They played their semifinal matches really well," Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. "They dominated from start to finish and looked great. Their final matches were tougher for sure, and it just wasn't quite the day for us. They played well to get there, and I'm proud of their performance."

The championship bracket finals will be played Wednesday at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center at Tyler Junior College. Gulf Coast will finish tied for 12th with Weatherford.

Burn won 8-2 over Jacksonville's Adriana Iturralde in No. 4 singles. Dubrow and Sullivan won by the same score against Meridian's Cayden Alexander and Lilly Hollingsworth.

Burn lost in the consolation finals to Mesa's Taylor Wasson, and the No. 3 team lost to the sixth-seeded duo from Barton.

Angela Moreno (So., Sevilla, Spain/IES V Centenario) lost 8-6 in the No. 1 singles semifinals to Iowa Central's Ayawavi Vania Dotse.

"Angie had a really tough match against a good player," Blackburn said. "They went back and forth against each other. She had game points in that last game, and it just didn't quite go her way."

Gulf Coast finishes up the 2024 with a nice list of accomplishments.

"It's been a good year," Blackburn said. "There were some goals we had that we fell a little short of, but overall, we had a great season. We got second in conference and region and were a top-15 team all year, and finished top-15 at the national tournament. A lot of teams would love to be doing those things, so we're going to be happy and proud of those results, too. It's been a good year for the Dogs."
