No. 12 Bulldogs roll past Coyotes

No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast closed out the women's tennis regular season in grand style Friday, sweeping past Coastal Alabama-South 9-0 in Daphne, Ala.

"Coastal was down a player, unfortunately, which would have made them deeper, but we went in there and did what we needed to do," Bulldogs coach Sam Blackburn said. "We played a couple of matches against good players we were able to do well against. We finished the regular season on a really strong note. I'm proud of them."

Valeria Callejo (Fr., Madrid, Spain/I.E.S. Ortega y Gasset) and Kendall Burn (So., Wiggins/Stone) won their No. 2 doubles match 8-1, as did Mikenzy Dubrow (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) and Lauren Sullivan (Fr., Laurel/Laurel Christian) at No. 3.

In singles, Danique Vermue (Fr., 's-Heerenhoek, Netherlands/Scheldemond College) won her No. 2 court dropping only one game, as did Burn at No. 4, Sullivan at No. 5 and Niyah Strickland (So., Pachuta/Quitman) at No. 6.

Gulf Coast (11-4) also learned its schedule for the NJCAA Region 23 Women's Tennis Championship on Friday. The second-seeded Bulldogs will play No. 7 Hinds in Ellisville at 3:30 p.m. next Thursday. They would face the Meridian-Northwest Mississippi winner in the semifinals Friday at 2 p.m., and the championship is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m.

"We're looking forward to it," Blackburn said. "I think we have a pretty good draw, and we had a pretty good performance against Hinds. It's not a team we can take it easy against. If we do well, we probably play Meridian who we beat 5-4 last time."
