Cotter, Fields named Bulldogs of the Week

PERKINSTON — Gonzalo Cotter and Simaru Fields have been named Bulldogs of the Week for Feb. 19-25.

Cotter, a freshman from Valencia, Spain, won three singles and three doubles matches during a 2-1 week for No. 12 Gulf Coast. The highlight was a three-set win over Wallace State's Kye Bennett, the 18th-ranked player in the country.

Fields, a sophomore guard from Pass Christian, put on a shooting exhibition in Gulf Coast's 82-50 win over Itawamba. She made 11-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, on the way to a 28-point, four-assist, five-steal night. In an 84-38 win at Hinds, she had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. She shot 70/50/100 for the week. 

Also nominated:

Adrian Byrd, a sophomore from Wiggins, pitched in relief in both games during Gulf Coast's MACCC tripleheader against Southwest and East Mississippi. He struck out 10 batters without a walk in five innings, allowing five hits.

Valeria Callejo, a freshman from Madrid, Spain, won all four of her matches during a 3-0 week for No. 12 Gulf Coast. She won her No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-1 to lead an 8-1 win over No. 13 Wallace State

Shaylynn Hoak, a freshman second baseman from Vancleave, batted .500 during a 2-2 week. She drove in two runs. She went 3-for-3 during a 11-3 win over Coastal Alabama-North.

Duran Parish, a freshman guard from Biloxi, filled up his stat line last week in a 2-0 week for Gulf Coast, averaging 18 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals. In a 78-72 overtime win at Hinds, he had 14 points and four rebounds. He helped lead a comeback from 16 down to beat Itawamba 89-74, scoring 22 points with seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Marc Stephens, a sophomore shortstop from Orange Beach, Ala., batted .500 during a 3-1 week for Gulf Coast. He went 2-for-3 with a triple in a 9-7 win over Southwest Mississippi, and 3-for-4 with a double in an 11-10 loss to Nunez. He drove in a run in every game to finish with five for the week and extended his hit streak to six.
