Smith, Evans named Bulldogs of the Week

PERKINSTON — Omarion Smith and Je'Mya Evans have been named Bulldogs of the Week of Jan. 22-28.

Smith, a sophomore forward from Atlanta, Ga., capped a great week with a perfect-shooting double-double in a 97-70 win over Holmes. He scored 19 points with 14 rebounds, making all six field goals and seven free throws. Smith scored 15 points with 7 rebounds in a 71-62 win at East Mississippi. He also had three blocks in each game.

Evans, a sophomore forward from Gulfport, put up consecutive dominant double-doubles in a pair of Gulf Coast wins. She had 29 points and 14 rebounds in a 78-47 win at East Mississippi, and she put up a 22-point, 10-board night to help beat Holmes 71-40.

Also nominated:  

Marc Stephens, a sophomore shortstop from Orange Beach, Ala., had three hits to help Gulf Coast win its baseball season-opener 8-7 over Baton Rouge. He drove in two runs, including a two-out RBI single in the eighth ahead of Kaden Irving's game-winning grand slam.

Cade Mattison, a sophomore from Hattiesburg, got the last six outs in Gulf Coast's 8-7 win over Baton Rouge. He came in with two on and no outs in the eighth, allowing just one run and ending the rally with a strikeout, pickoff and fielding a short tapper barehanded to retire the batter at first. He struck out two.
