Bulldogs win one, lose one

Mississippi Gulf Coast earned a split on its first day of the 2022 baseball season, beating Southern Union and losing to host Coastal Alabama-South.

The Bulldogs beat Southern Union 10-5 before falling 15-5 in five innings in the nightcap.

The Bulldogs opened the season at Bay Minette, Ala., with Alex McWhorter (So., Semmes, Ala./Faith Academy) and Luke Reed (So., Louisville, Ky./Holy Cross) having big first games against Southern Union.

An All-Region 23 performer last year, McWhorter had a three-run home run in the first and added a double.

Reed struck out six and allowed one run in four innings, earning the win on a scripted staff day. Jesse Johnson (So., Purvis/Purvis) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, and McWhorter threw a scoreless ninth.

Thomas Hollingsworth (Fr., Madison/Germantown) had three hits, and Cade Crosby (Fr., Gulfport/Gulfport) had three RBI. Crosby, Smith and Kade Carpenter had two hits each.

Gulf Coast managed only four hits against the hosts, with Smith getting a double.

The Bulldogs play Wallace State-Hanceville and Parkland in Decatur on Friday.
