Bulldogs tied for 7th after another split

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast had a great opportunity to break an astonishing string of splits in MACCC baseball doubleheaders, but the Bulldogs couldn't grab a Game 2 win against Copiah-Lincoln.

Adam May (Fr., Magee/Magee) threw a gem in the opener, winning 13-1 in five innings. The Wolves slowed down the Gulf Coast bats in the second game, winning 6-2.

Gulf Coast (18-23, 13-13 MACCC) is now in a four-way tie for seventh. The top nine teams qualify for the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, meaning the Bulldogs still have work to do.

They'll close the regular season Friday by hosting Mississippi Delta for Sophomore Day. First pitch is set for 2 p.m., and the games will be streamed at https://livestream.com/mgcccbulldogs/events/10358480.

Co-Lin is 12-31, 7-21.

May allowed struck out five while allowing five hits and just one walk.

"Adam just had pinpoint command on his fastball and made quality pitches," Gulf Coast coach Bob Keller said. "He gave us another good start, and we got some timely hits. Some guys really swung the bats in Game 1. We got hot and started rolling the bats there."

All nine starters had base hits for Gulf Coast, let by Cade Crosby who drove in four runs with two hits, incuding a double. One of his RBI was a sacrifice fly the right fielder pulled back from over the wall to prevent a grand slam.

Sean Smith (Fr., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) and Thomas Hollingsworth (Fr., Madison/Germantown) had two RBI each. Crosby, Smith, Alex McWhorter (So., Semmes, Ala./Faith Academy), Alec Hardy (So., Wiggins/Stone) and Preston Ratliff (So., Slidell, La./Northshore) had two hits each.

Gulf Coast had 13 hits in the first game, but only six in the second.

"In Game 2, their pitcher had things going their way," Keller said. "Luke was in a bend-but-don't-break outing, and he's been great for us all year, but at some point we've got to score some more runs for him. He's been excellent for us all year."

Smith ran his hitting streak to 15 games with a solo homer in the first inning. McCauley had an RBI double in the fourth.
