Dominant Reed gets 3rd shutout

Luke Reed did more Luke Reed things for Mississippi Gulf Coast on Wednesday night, dominating Southwest Mississippi 3-0 for a third shutout on the season.

The sophomore right-hander from Louisville, Ky., struck out nine without walking anybody in a three-hitter.

It earned the Bulldogs (16-21) yet another split, making them 11-for-11 in MACCC doubleheaders this season. Southwest rallied to win the first game 10-5.

Alex McWhorter (So., Semmes, Ala./Faith Academy) drove in a run with a single in the first inning, and that was all Reed would need. McWhorter added another RBI single in the third, and Alec Hardy (So., Wiggins/Stone) followed with another for the final margin.

Reed (7-4) allowed a leadoff single in the second, and leadoff doubles in the fourth and fifth. He got a strikeout and two ground balls in the fourth, and two strikeouts and a groundout in the fifth to get out of potential trouble.

Sean Smith (Fr., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) had two hits and scored twice for Gulf Coast, and Cade Crosby also had two singles.

Preston Ratliff (So., Slidell, La./Northshore) had a squeeze bunt in the fourth inning, and Thomas Hollingsworth (Fr., Madison/Germantown) added an RBI double to make it 4-1. Ratliff's single in the sixth made it 5-2, but Southwest scored seven in the bottom of the inning.

Hardy had two singles, as did Kade Carpenter (Fr., Vancleave/Vancleave).

Gulf Coast plays its final road doubleheader of the regular season Saturday. The Bulldogs travel to Fulton to play Itawamba starting at 2 p.m. The games will be streamed at https://letsgoicctv.com/.
