Durr joins football staff

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast football coach Jack Wright has added the final coach to his 2021 staff, hiring former SEC cornerback Lashard Durr.

Durr traveled the path that Gulf Coast defensive backs want to head down, having played in the MACCC, the Power 5 and making it to an NFL camp. He has a connection with current Bulldogs defensive coordinator Brett Shufelt.

"Coach Shufelt reached out to me, and I told him I'd love the opportunity to coach at Gulf Coast," Durr said. "I've been working with him and Coach (Clarence) McDougal, and I've been enjoying the process."

Durr had an All-State career at Harrison Central High School that saw him play in the Max Emfinger All-American Bowl. Durr starred two seasons at Copiah-Lincoln where he had 63 tackles, 22 pass breakups, three interceptions and a fumble return for touchdown. He was ranked the No. 7 junior college corner in the country by 24/7 and 52nd overall JUCO player by Scout.

Durr then went to Mississippi State, where he was a lockdown corner and two-year starter. He had 36 tackles, four pass breakups and one interception in 25 games. The Bulldogs defense ranked 12th in the nation against the pass in his senior season.

"We're glad to have a local guy who played in the SEC," Wright said. "He's going to be able to connect with these Coast kids in recruiting. Having recently played, he's going to be able to relate to the players and help some of us older coaches reach the guys in ways we can't sometimes."

Durr has a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from MSU. He has a daughter, Loghan Durr, 3.
