Top-15 showdown has big implications

Top-15 showdown has big implications

PERKINSTON — The teams have met for the last two MACCC championship games and on Thursday they'll meet again in a regular-season contest filled with big implications.

No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast won in Senatobia in 2019 on the way to the NJCAA championship, and No. 12 Northwest Mississippi won at Perk in 2020. But Bulldogs coach Jack Wright said that's not a factor this time around.

"Every game is its own game, and every year is its own year," he said. "2020 is over, and it's 2021. We want to win in 2021, and mainly we want to win because it's the next game. We try to win every game, and it has nothing to do with last year or two years ago."

Kickoff at A.L. May Memorial Stadium is set for 7 p.m. The game will be streamed at https://livestream.com/mgcccbulldogs/events/9887556 and can be heard on SuperTalk 103.1 FM. Tickets, including chairbacks, are available at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/tickets.

Fans are being encouraged to wear pink to the game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Gulf Coast (5-1) needs a win to close out its non-division slate undefeated, which would improve its South tiebreakers. The Bulldogs are in second place, a half-game ahead of Hinds.

The Rangers (4-2) are in a similar situation, tied with Coahoma for second behind unbeaten East Mississippi.

Wright says Northwest will bring an efficient offense led by sophomore quarterback Michael Hiers. He leads the conference in passing yards (275.7 per game), and D.T. Sheffield is the only receiver over 100 yards per game.

"I'm excited to have Northwest coming to our place," Wright said. "It's a big game. I think it's two good football teams with a lot of good athletes on the field at the same time. There's going to be a lot of prospects on the field at the same time. It should be a great environment, and I think our guys will play really hard with great energy."

Past the midpoint of the season, the Bulldogs have gotten a steadily increasing infusion of talent, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Light bulbs have turned on above a lot of players' heads as they've gotten some more experience.

"I'm really proud of our young defensive guys who have started playing really well as of late," Wright said. "Josiah Perryman, Ricardo Williams, Ishmael Naylor, Kylen Armstead and Joseph Perryman are some talented guys from our 2021 recruiting class who have waited patiently the first part of the season. They are getting rewarded with some playing time, and it's paying off with results."
