Bulldogs outlast Co-Lin

PERKINSTON — Shots rained down on and around the Copiah-Lincoln goal all game, even into overtime, Tuesday at Bary Thrash Field.

Mississippi Gulf Coast hit the woodwork a half-dozen times, but it wasn't until the 102nd minute, in the second overtime, that the scoreless deadlock was broken. And it was by defender Molly Etchells

"I wasn't even going to go up, which is the funny thing," she said. "But I saw the opportunity and I just hit it. Luckily it was quite a good goal. We made it hard for ourselves, but I'm just glad we won. I don't care if I score or anybody else scores, we got the win."

Gulf Coast (6-6, 4-4 MACCC South) broke a three-game losing streak with the 1-0 win. The Bulldogs did it by just cranking shot after shot.

After yet another shot was punched out by the Wolves keeper following a corner kick, the ball bounced high to Etchells at the top corner of the box. She booted a chest-high shot that looped over the keeper's head and into the far side netting.

"Forty shots later, we got one in the back of the net," Gulf Coast coach Jackie Rhodes said. "I thought we did a lot right, but at the end of the day, soccer is a cruel, cruel game sometimes. We got the win and we'll move forward."

Gulf Coast remained in fourth in the MACCC South playoff race, one point behind Pearl River. The Bulldogs play at Southwest on Friday, and the Wildcats host Co-Lin. MGCCC and PRCC meet each other at Perk on the final day of the regular season, next Tuesday.
