Bulldogs draw with Bears

Mississippi Gulf Coast didn't get the win they might have expected Friday at Summit, but the Bulldogs did just enough to stay alive in the MACCC South women's soccer playoff chase. They tied Southwest Mississippi 1-1 after the game went through double overtime.

In fact, the Gulf Coast calculus remains the same. If the Bulldogs beat Pearl River on Tuesday at Perkinston, they'll secure a place in the postseason.

"We got a tie, so I'll take it," Gulf Coast coach Jackie Rhodes said. "We're still controlling our destiny as far as the playoffs are concerned."

Gulf Coast is now 6-6-1 overall, 4-4-1 South. Southwest (3-11-1, 0-8-1) picked up its first division point of the season.

The Bears scored in the 73rd minute before Katie Brown (So., Picayune/Home School) earned a penalty kick in the 80th. She converted to equalize, and nobody else could score in the final 30 minutes of play.

"Our injuries are finally catching up with us," Rhodes said. "We're pretty banged up, so I think we're seeing the results of it at the back of the season. Give credit to Southwest for coming out ready to play."
