No. 4 Bulldog sweep to 1st MACCC title of season

No. 4 Mississippi Gulf Coast faced tougher conditions in the second round of the Warrior Invitational on Tuesday, but the Bulldogs managed to extend their dominant lead by a stroke. They won their first MACCC event by 28 shots over Meridian and Northeast Mississippi.

"I don't think we had our complete game together, but the guys were able to fight through that and post decent numbers. We're still able to win the day, essentially. Round by round, that's our goal each and every tournament."

Gulf Coast posted the co-low score at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Philadelphia with those other two teams, and they had three golfers in the top four. Andrew Zielinski (So., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs), playing as an individual, finished at 3-under, six shots behind medalist Will Thompson from host East Central.

Will Burnham (So., Jackson/Jackson Prep) and Stanley Campbell (Fr., London, England/Essex Golf College) tied for third another shot back. Those three Bulldogs were on the All-Tournament Team.

"I saw a lot of good things out of Will," Thornton said. "To have three guys finish in the top five with Stanley and Drew playing well, I think the more they give themselves that opportunity, they're going to find a win in the near future."

John Mark Mills (Fr., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy) finished seventh, and Peyton Russell (Fr., Gautier/Gautier) was 11th. Kyle Davidson (So., Kyalami, South Africa/St. Peter's College) tied for 14th.

Gulf Coast will play in the Bobcat Invitational starting Oct. 16 at the Laurel Country Club. It will be the last MACCC event of the fall, with the Bulldogs hosting the MGCCC Fall Invitational the last two days of the month.
