No. 1 Gulf Coast surges to lead

No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast flexed its muscles in the second 18 Monday at the GlenLakes Invitational, powering to a five-shot lead over No. 6 Central Alabama.

The Bulldogs shot 11-under to finish the long day in Foley, Ala., at 5-under par. They were 10 shots better than CACC in the second round.

"We come to these events to test ourselves against great competition," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "We couldn't get anything going in the morning round but were able to catch fire on the afternoon round. That gives us a great chance tomorrow."

The Bulldogs were so good in the second round they had to throw out a 2-over-par score from their five-man team. Stanley Campbell (Fr., London, England/Essex Golf College) fired the low round of the day with a 4-under 68. Jackson Wise (So., Pontotoc/North Pontotoc) and Andrew Zielinski (So., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) shot 3-under 69s, with John Mark Mills (Fr., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy) carding a 71.

Wise moved into a third-place tie at 2-under, two shots behind Andrew College's Linus Lindahl.

"Jackson played very solid today, and it could have been even better with a couple more putts falling," Thornton said. "He's shown great leadership all year and was able to grind out some good scores for us today. It will be an exciting finish tomorrow, I'm sure."

Gulf Coast will close out the event Tuesday morning. An 8:15 shotgun start is planned.
