EDIT: THE GAME WILL BE PLAYED AT WEST HARRISON HIGH SCHOOL
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast has clinched the MACJC South Division title for the second straight season, but the Bulldogs still have things to play for when Southwest visits Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (9-2, 6-0 South) might see the Bears (8-2-2, 2-2-1 South) again down the line.
"We just want to stay sharp against a good opponent," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. "It could potentially be a playoff opponent. From that angle, it's super important."
Rains from Hurricane Nate and Monday's continuing rains have made the surface in Perkinston unplayable, and it will take place at West Harrison High School. The women will start at 6 p.m. There will be no internet broadcast.
If Southwest is able to hang onto third place in the division, they would play the second-place team from the North in the quarterfinals. That winner would turn around and play MGCCC in the MACJC semifinals on Oct. 28.
Despite riding a 20-game South Division win streak, Gulf Coast isn't resting on its laurels.
"We want to still figure things out," Handy said. "We're tweaking a few things here and there, just trying to stay sharp and healthy. We need to get playoff fit, not just regular-season fit. Those are two different things."
