PERKINSTON — No. 20 Mississippi Gulf Coast scored twice in the last 18 minutes to pull out a 5-3 victory over Holmes on Sophomore Night at the MGCCC Soccer Complex.
"It's a game we needed," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. It's a bit of a wakeup call. We're still making some mistakes at the back. We've got to clean it up in a week."
Jordan Hall (So, Manchester, England/Royton and Crompton) had three goals and an assist to power the Bulldogs attack. They improved to 12-2 headed into next week's MACJC Tournament.
The Bulldogs have a bye into Saturday's semifinals, where they'll play the winner of the Itawamba-Southwest game Tuesday. A win in the 1 p.m. game would advance them to Sunday's championship game at 1 and earn them a berth in the South District playoffs in Texas.
Gulf Coast took three different one-goal leads, but each time Holmes tied the game back up.
Hall assisted on the sixth goal of the season for Jeff Bruni Jr. (So, Gulfport/Gulfport), which came in the fourth minute. C.J. Smith (Fr, Brampton, Ontario/David Suzuki Secondary School) found Hall in the 34th minute to make it 2-1, but Holmes tied it back up before halftime.
Hall's second goal came on another Smith assist in the 53rd minute, but Holmes tied it less than 70 seconds later.
Jonathan Page (So, Gulfport/West Harrison) sent a header across the six-yard box to Brayan Resendiz (Fr, Horn Lake/Horn Lake) for his fourth of the season and a 4-3 lead with 17:06 left.
Hall got his 25th of the year 10 minutes later to help lift his sophomore class to its 16th win in 19 games at Perkinston.
"That's what they do," Handy said. "They win. I'm happy for those guys who got to win their last game at home. They've won a bunch of games here."
