No. 19 Gulf Coast wallops Hinds

PERKINSTON — No. 19 Mississippi Gulf Coast stayed undefeated on this season Saturday by beating Hinds 8-1.

The Bulldogs have won their first four matches, but there's still plenty of room for their performance to improve.

"We're still not there mentally," Gulf Coast coach Gary Bourgeois said. "Physically, we've got all the attributes of a championship team, the heart. We just have to figure out a little bit more about situational play and focus. We have to be able to hit the right ball in the right situation. It's about decision-making."

Gulf Coast dropped its only point in No. 1 doubles but claimed the other two while dropping only two games. Seth Macute (Fr., St Joseph's Nudgee College/Brisbane, Australia) and Wesley Fontaine (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) won their No. 2 doubles match without dropping a game, and Macute won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Fontaine and Patrick Roth (So., Resurrection/Pascagoula) lost only two games each in their singles matches, and Raymond Lam (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) also double-bageled his opponent.

Serban Bonchis (Fr., Mihai Eminescu National College/Oradea, Romania) won the match of the day, rallying from behind in the first and third sets to win 7-5, 2-6, 10-7.

Gulf Coast entertains Jones on Wednesday, Copiah-Lincoln on Wednesday and Meridian on Friday in a busy week, weather permitting. First serves in all the matches are set for 1 p.m.
