No. 3 Bulldogs back at it this week
PERKINSTON — No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast is back in action after a rare week off with a key MACCC South showdown on the road.
The Bulldogs, who moved up a spot in this week's NJCAA rankings, head to Decatur on Thursday to play East Central, which is tied with Jones for fourth in the division. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
"They have two fantastic quarterbacks," Gulf Coast coach Jack Wright said. "They have a very difficult-to-defend offensive scheme with a lot of moving parts. There's a wide variety of play types you have to be prepared for, and they have not given up a lot of points all year long. It's a significant challenge."
Tickets for the game are on sale at https://ecccathletics.com/tickets. The Bulldogs radio broadcast can be heard at SuperTalk 103.1 FM or https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch. The video stream will be available at https://www.eccclive.com/gold-channel/.
Landon Sims is the Warriors' leading quarterback, has thrown for 766 yards and eight touchdowns. He's also rushed 21 times for 92 yards and another score. Chris Tucker has completed 22-of-41 passes for 327 yards and a touchdown. Eelijah Singleton has caught 24 passes for 319 yards, and Lawrence Armstrong has caught three touchdown passes.
The MACCC instituted an open date in its schedule this year, so the Bulldogs didn't have a game last week. The Bulldogs tried to find the balance between staying sharp and getting rejuvenated.
"We spent a lot of time in the weight room and film room," Wright said. "We did some conditioning and had a couple of really good days of practice. The main thing was to find little ways and areas in the game to get better, whether it be situational football or special teams. We want to be a little more aware of what teammates are doing, dig real deep and try to get better."
Gulf Coast leads the country in total offense, totaling 485.4 yards per game. It's a balanced attack, ranking sixth in rushing and 11th in passing.
The offensive line has been paving that way, and at its literal center is Ryan Pascal. After redshirting his first year at Perkinston, he's about to punch a ticket to another level.
"Ryan Pascal came here as a walk-on," Wright said. "He sat behind Joe Bradford, who was a really good center last year. He's come in and been great. He's a leader for us in the offensive line. He's next-to-perfect at being the quarterback of that group, getting everybody on the same page. I'm really proud for him to come in here and take that path. It's worked out for him, and he's going to have a ton of opportunities to play at the next level."
