No. 7 MGCCC gears up for Homecoming

PERKINSTON — No. 7 Mississippi Gulf Coast heads into the school's 93rd Homecoming game looking to take another step toward the postseason.

The Bulldogs play Coahoma at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at A.L. May Memorial Stadium, and a win over their last North Division opponent would lock up an important tiebreaker. That mid-afternoon weekend kickoff provides a major adjustment for coach Jack Wright's squad.

"The schedule is different with the pregame routine," he said. "The leadup to the game is different. We talk to our guys all the time about playing like a pro. To me, you just do the next thing right, whether that's setting your alarm, waking up to go eat breakfast, be at the pregame meal, you just do the next thing correctly and that typically pays off."

Buy your tickets ahead of time to save money. It costs $10 for adults or $7 for youth online, or $15 and $10 at the gate. Tickets are available at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/tickets, and the game will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch. It can be heard on SuperTalk 103.1 FM.

Gulf Coast (6-1) is 58-34 in Homecoming contests, and the Bulldogs are 3-0 against the Tigers on those occasions. MGCCC is 21-2 against Coahoma (0-7) all-time, and one of those losses was a double forfeit.

Don't expect this to be a walkover, however. The Tigers are coming off a 21-13 loss to Northeast Mississippi on their homecoming.

"They've moved the ball on everybody," Wright said. "They're efficient on offense, and they've got a really good ball-control passing game. They play really hard and have a really good-looking O-line."

Deshaun Cotron is a dangerous receiver and returner who brought a kickoff back 92 yards for a touchdown against East Mississippi.

The Bulldogs used the extra time with a Saturday game to dive into some film study. They looked hard at Coahoma and also back at themselves to address some issues.

"We got a lot of extra film work on Monday, and we did a light workout on Tuesday," Wright said. "We'll have two good days Wednesday and Thursday."

Montrell Chapman (So., Batesville/South Panola) is among the team's leading tackles with 47. He's got 3.5 tackles for loss and an interception.

He's had three double-digit tackle games: Jones, Southwest and East Central. It's making the scouts notice, with Chapman piling up 14 offers to play at the Next Level.

"Montrell's had a great year," Wright said. "He's a really hard hitter, a thumper in the middle. He's a big guy and a physical presence. He's gotten us lined up right and makes a lot of calls for us. He's a mature kid whose had a great sophomore season."
