In 1966, he was named All-State, First Team Offensive All-Star and All-American. At Southern Miss, Boutwell led the football team to the first-ever victories over Mississippi State in both 1967 and 1968. He led USM in rushing in both seasons, running for 1,583 yards in 1968.
He was selected Senior College Honorable Mention All-American and was selected in the 13th round by the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League Draft.
