Vermue named CSC Academic All-American

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast's Danique Vermue has been named to the 2024-25 College Sports Communicators Academic All-American Women's At-Large Team for the College Division.

The Bulldogs tennis star earned a spot on the Second Team after graduating with a perfect 4.00 GPA in elementary education.

"Winning is what athletes I always want to do," Vermue said. "It's something we fight for because we like to win. I'm very excited because I just did my best, practiced hard, and I did a lot for school, but I never really thought I would win an award. I'm very honored."

The CSC Academic All-American program was established in 1952. It is the longest-running and premier award for athletic and academic success across college sports. Former winners include Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Candace Parker and Katie Ledecky.

Vermue is the seventh Gulf Coast student-athlete to be named to the women's Academic All-American team since 2019. There were 20 named to the College At-Large Division team this year. The College Division includes two-year schools, Canadian institutions and other schools not affiliated with the NCAA or NAIA.

The criteria for selection include performance on the court, and Vermue excelled there. The sophomore from 's-Heerenhoek, Netherlands, went 11-3 in No. 1 singles this year, and 12-2 in No. 1 doubles. In both seasons at Perk, she advanced to the NJCAA Tournament Round of 16 in singles and doubles.

She led coach Sam Blackburn's Bulldogs to a 12th-place finish at the NJCAA Championship both seasons. Gulf Coast were MACCC and Region 23 runners-up each year.

Vermue earned Phi Theta Kappa honors at Gulf Coast and was an NJCAA All-Academic First Team and Distinguished Academic All-MACCC twice.

Excelling on the court and in the classroom is just in her blood.

"I love it," Vermue said. "It's what I always wanted to do, when you love something and really want to fight for it. It's always been my dream to do both at a very high level, and I've always been a perfectionist. When I want something, I go for it 100 percent."
