PERKINSTON — The kickoff time for No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast's MACCC semifinal in Senatobia has been moved up to 2 p.m. to beat potential bad weather associated with Hurricane Rafael.
It's likely to be a storm of a different kind at Bobby Franklin Field when the Bulldogs play No. 4 Northwest Mississippi.
"They're a tremendous team on an eight-game winning streak," Gulf Coast coach Jack Wright said. "They have a bunch of really talented players, and they're absolutely loaded at certain positions."
Gulf Coast (8-1) will be trying to punch a ticket to its first MACCC championship game since 2020. The Bulldogs have won outright or shared the South Division title for the last six seasons.
Northwest went unbeaten in North Division play to win that title with only a season-opening loss to Pearl River taking away from a perfect season.
No. 8 East Central entertains No. 12 Holmes in the other semifinal. Kickoff in Decatur is also at 2 p.m.
Zach Wilcke has thrown every pass for Northwest this season, completing 58.1 percent of his passes for 1,526 yards, eight touchdowns and nine interceptions. He started eight games at Southern Miss two years ago.
"They've got a Division I-transfer at quarterback, and he looks the part," Wright said. "He's big and strong and can make every throw. He can win with his legs."
D'Mariun Perteet is a bruising running back who went over 1,000 yards in eight games. He's scored 12 touchdowns behind a big, strong offensive line.
"We've got to take care of the football and give ourselves a chance throughout four quarters to make this a close game and keep it tight," Wright said. "Our kids are going to have make plays, create some turnovers. We need to flip the team on special teams and make some plays when we have the opportunity."
Bulldogs defensive back Marcus House (So., Batesville/South Panola) is from that neck of the woods, and he'll be a key contributor to the Regulators' efforts to slow down the Rangers. The 5-foot-9, 185-pounder keeps showing up on the game film.
"Marcus has been part of the backbone of this program for the last two years," Wright said. "He's made a lot of plays here recently. He was injured in 2023 and didn't play, but this year he's had a fantastic year. He does everything he's asked, and he's made a lot of tackles. You go in and watch film, and you figure out who made plays and who made tackles, and he's always in on the play."
