Vos, Roth, Fontaine win at NJCAA Tourney

No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast picked up three wins on the first day of the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship on Monday in Tucson, Ariz.

"We had some closes matches and it was a tough draw," Gulf Coast coach Gary Bourgeois said. "I feel optimistic now because we've got six points. Last year we only had two and made a good run."

Austin Vos (So., Perth Australia/Applecross), Patrick Roth (Fr., Pascagoula/Resurrection) and Wesley Fontaine (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) will play in the round of 16 on Tuesday morning.

Vos won his No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Moraine's Nick Karczynski. He'll play third-seeded Toru Horie from ASA Miami at 9 a.m. Central.

Roth beat Moraine's Davis Souza 6-0, 6-1 in No. 4 singles, and he'll face Valter Oshiro, the fourth-seed, from Cowley at 11:30.

Fontaine bested Lake County's Brian Szramek 6-4, 6-3 to advance and play Cowley's Killian Dagneaux at 11:30.

The Bulldogs lost three singles matches and all three doubles matches. Those spots will now play in the consolation bracket either Tuesday or Wednesday.

"We've got some winnable matches now, so now we make a run toward the consolation finals," Bourgeois said. "We've seen the enemy now, and we know what we're up against. Hopefully we can regroup tomorrow and put some W's on the board and move forward."
