Steede wins NJCAA honor
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast needed a win and at least a tie last week to claim home field for an MACCC/Region 23 playoff game, and Skyler Steede more than held up her end of the bargain.
The sophomore keeper from Lucedale has been named NJCAA Keeper of the Week for stopping 22 of 23 shots to help earn that home game.
Gulf Coast went 1-0-1 to clinch second place in the MACCC South. She stopped all 10 shots in a 3-0 shutout at Southwest Mississippi, and then had 12 saves, including a series of point-blank stops, in a 1-1 tie against Pearl River.
The Bulldogs won Tuesday's playoff game against Northwest Mississippi to advance to the MACCC/Region 23 semifinals, which will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. at Bary Thrash Field.
It's the second national weekly award for the Gulf Coast team this year. Alyssa Palisi won Player of the Week earlier this season.
