MGCCC’s Allen, Younger win Halbrook Certificates

PERKINSTON — Two tennis players from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College have been honored with David M. Halbrook Certificates for Athletic Achievement Among Athletes for the 2015-16 school year.

Bryan Allen and Karah Younger won the awards, which are given out based on service, leadership, academic and athletic achievement. Allen and Younger earned NJCAA Superior Athletic Achievement Awards for finishing with grade-point averages between 3.80-3.99. They both also won Distinguished Academic All-MACJC honors.

Gulf Coast won its fourth David M. Halbrook Award since 2009-10 by graduating 98 percent of its student-athletes.

Administered cooperatively by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, the Mississippi Community College Board, and the Mississippi Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the purpose of the Halbrook Awards program is to recognize colleges and universities that maintain and achieve high academic standards for student athletes, thus encouraging high graduation rates. While serving in the Mississippi Legislature, Representative David M. Halbrook Sr., along with his brothers, John Halbrook, James Halbrook, and J. A. Halbrook, endowed the Halbrook Awards.
