Stokes, Nichols named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Donald Stokes and Aidan Nichols have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for March 27-April 2.

Stokes, a freshman shortstop from Ocean Springs, batted .533 for the week, with two home runs and two doubles for No. 20 Gulf Coast. In a 7-2 win over Holmes, he bashed two opposite-field home runs and had a double while driving in four runs. Stokes had another double in the first game of the doubleheader, a 16-1 shellacking.

Nichols, a freshman from Brandon, won twice for No. 5 Gulf Coast, including handing No. 1 Jones County its first loss of the season. She pitched eight innings in that game, striking out 11 while allowing seven hits and three earned runs in a 7-6 win. In a 7-4 win at Meridian, Nichols struck out five while allowing three earned runs. She also batted .300 for the week, with a double, a triple and two RBI.

Lexie Mathis, a sophomore utility player from Mobile, batted .462 with a home run and a double for No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast. She went 3-for-4 and scored three times as the Lady Bulldogs handed No. 1 Jones County its first loss of the season in a 7-6 win. She went 4-for-7 for the doubleheader. Mathis extended her hit streak to 13 games during a sweep at Meridian where she slugged a home run.

Dylan Mills-Derouen, a sophomore pitcher from Biloxi, pitched five innings of three-hit ball for No. 20 Mississippi Gulf Coast in a 7-2 win against Holmes. He struck out eight, walked two and allowed one unearned run.

Travis Bell, a freshman from Jackson, didn't drop a set while winning six matches for No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast. He dropped only five games while paired with John Murphy at No. 1 doubles.

Bianca Buie, a freshman from Baia Mare, Romania, dominated in three No. 2 singles matches, dropping only four games. She teamed with Paulina Estrada to win all three No. 1 doubles matches, too.

Colin Troxler, a sophomore from Luling, La., finished second at the final MACJC regular-season event of the year. His second-round charge toward the lead left him one shot short at 5-under. Troxler and the No. 4 Bulldogs finished second in the tournament.
