Weird walk-off earns MGCCC split

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast bounced back from its first loss of the 2024 baseball season to get a walk-off win without a Bulldog ever needing to lift the bat from their shoulder.

Gulf Coast (8-1) erased a two-run deficit in the seventh inning against Coastal Alabama-South with two walks and four consecutive hit-batsmen. The Bulldogs won 5-4 after dropping the opener 14-3 at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.

Brody Swindle (So., Fairhope, Ala./Bayside Academy) didn't get the win, but pitched well enough to earn one. He struck out nine while throwing six innings, allowing just two earned runs. Cade Mattison (So., Hattiesburg/Lamar Christian) got the win with an inning of one-hit relief.

Ty Mancha (So., Albuquerque, N.M./Mobile Christian) and Keondre Fields (Fr., Nesbit/Magnolia Heights) walked to start the inning, then Charlie Keller (So., Mobile, Ala./Mobile Christian) got plunked. After a pitching change, the new Coyotes pitcher hit Landon Holliman (Fr., Hattiesburg/Sumrall), Brandon Cain (So., Mobile, Ala./Baker) and pinch-hitter Seth Sterling (Fr., Vicksburg/Warren Central) to drive in three runs.

Marc Stephens (So., Orange Beach, Ala./Gulf Shores) had two hits in the nightcap, and Fields had a double.

In the opener, Coastal Alabama (2-6) had 17 hits off four Bulldog pitchers. Gulf Coast managed just three hits, with Keilon Parnell (Fr., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) getting a double.

The Bulldogs travel to Enterprise State on Sunday for a single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Gulf Coast is back at Ken "Curly" Farris Field on Tuesday for an MACCC three-way day. The Bulldogs play Southwest Mississippi at 1 p.m. and East Mississippi in a game scheduled for 6 p.m. The other two teams will play the middle game.
