Moorer, Sanders named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — DaJuan Moorer and Avery Sanders have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for Feb. 18-24.

Moorer, a sophomore forward from Pensacola, flirted with a triple-double and had 23 points in both Gulf Coast's games this week while shooting 77.3 percent from the floor and grabbing 8.5 rebounds per game. In an 85-75 loss to Jones, he had 23 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three blocks. In an 89-83 win at Hinds, he grabbed nine rebounds, dished out three assists, had two steals and two blocks.

Sanders, a sophomore right-hander from Thibodaux, La., allowed only one earned run in a 9-5 victory over No. 3 LSU Eunice, and also picked up a save. In the win against the Lady Bengals, she struck out eight and walked just two. She got the save in a 6-4 win over Marion Military with 2.1 innings of one-hit scoreless relief, striking out three.

Also nominated:

Breannah McCullah, a sophomore guard from Edwards, averaged 17.5 points as the Lady Bulldogs clinched their first playoff berth since 2013. She had 18 points, five steals and three blocks in an 80-68 loss to No. 4 Jones. In the clinching 62-50 win at Hinds, she had 17 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Ike Williams, a sophomore outfielder from St. Martin, batted .571 and drove in four runs in a pair of games for Gulf Coast.

Shelby Archer, a freshman infielder from Pearl River Central, slugged three home runs and drove during a 3-1 week for MGCCC, including a split with No. 3. LSU Eunice. She had hits in all four games, including a two-home run game against Marion Military in a 7-5 win to clinch a DH sweep. She hit the first LSU-E pitch for a solo shot in a 4-3 loss in the opener, then went 2-for-3 with a double in a 9-5 win.
