Cade, Hall named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Kristen Cade and Dawson Hall have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for Feb. 25-March 3.

 

Cade, a freshman right-hander from Harrison Central, struck out seven in a five-inning 9-1 win over No. 12 Lansing. She didn't walk anybody and scattered six hits.

 

Hall, a freshman from East Central, got the win for No. 14 Gulf Coast in a 9-1 complete-game victory over Illinois Central. He struck out 10, walked just one and allowed four hits.

 

Also nominated:

 

Dee Hawthorne, a freshman from Harrison Central, went 3-for-3 and reached base 5-of-6 plate appearances in No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast's sweep of Illinois Central. In a 9-1 win, he had a sacrifice fly and got hit by pitches twice. He drove in three runs with a double and drove in another with a single in a 14-2 win in five innings in the second game.

 

Shelby Archer, a freshman infielder from Pearl River Central, batted .714 with a home run and three RBI as Gulf Coast split a doubleheader against No. 12 Lansing. She went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI in a 9-1 win in Game 1, then hit a two-out, game-tying home run in the eighth inning of a 5-3 loss in nine innings.

 

Margarita Lopareva, a sophomore from Russia, won five of six matches for the Lady Bulldogs. She won three times at No. 1 singles, and teamed with Megan Bankston to claim two of three points at No. 1 singles

 

Evan Chubb, a sophomore from St. Patrick, won all six matches he played in for No. 18 Gulf Coast, which stayed unbeaten. He teamed with Patrick Roth to win three times at No. 2 doubles and dropped only 12 games in sweeping three matches at No. 3 singles.

 

Shelli Thigpen, a sophomore guard from Wylie, Texas, averaged 17.5 points, four assists and three rebounds to help Mississippi Gulf Coast get to the semifinals of the MACJC Tournament. She had 19 points, four assists, and made all seven free throws in a 64-45 win over Northeast. In an 86-67 loss to Jones, she had 16 points, four assists and four rebounds.
